Acericerus (or Idiocerus) heydenii female

size: 6 - 6.5mm

Within the genus idiocerus there are some 20 species in Netherlands. The genus is usually split up into three groups, depending on the plant they live on. There is a Willow group, an Alder group and a Maple group. Our Idiocerus heydenii (in Netherlands) belongs to the Maple group (often referred to as genus or sub genus Acericerus). This presents us with a problem, for it has a few cousins that are extremely similar. And to make matters even mor complicated there is always the possibility of import from the Far East. Besides, scientists are still not absolutely sure how many species there actually are. The whole group has not been studied intensively yet.

Amazing capture of this fascinating little Leafhopper. Even though it is very small in your picture it shows details and colours pretty well. I think it would be good if you put in the size in your note.

Hello Marie Christine,I like your presentations of animals not often seen very much. And fortunately for us viewers you provide wonderful informative notes. Keep up the interesting work!
This dwarf cicada is well presented even if the best focus is on the eye further away. The problem with the artificial background is the contrast. Personally I have dislocated animals sitting on my window sill to put them on a darker background. This might be tricky with those jumpy things!

Encore une créature intéressante et que nous connaissons si peu. Il faut dire qu'avec leur taille si petite, on risque de ne pas les voir. As-tu une formation de biologiste pour si bien connaître tous ces mini-formats?

Nice little critter indeed. Well lighted,considering the difficult contrast situation. Perhaps a slightly tighter compo would have been even more informative ?
I have seen several of those this year(at least I think it is the same species - I'll post a picture in the WS) but I did not go further than Idiocerus sp. !
