[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The Field pansy (Viola arvensis Murr., syn. Viola tricolor var. arvensis (Murr.) Boiss.) is a species of the genus Viola. Also called Heart's Ease, possibly due to the odor of Wintergreen when the roots are crushed. This plant is native to Europe, but is found in old fields and waste ground in the eastern United States. Amongst the earliest of Violets to appear in the spring, it seems to utilize some sort of growth retardant on nearby plants, appearing to be the only plant growing in the large masses it forms. Outside these colonies, the grasses and herbs grow normally.
The lower leaves are oval, becoming narrowly oval or spear-shaped towards the top of the plant. The bilaterally symmetrical flowers have a short spur. The petals are generally cream in colour with a yellow centre, the upper petals are sometimes pale blue or purple. The sepals are as long as the petals.

La pensée des champs (Viola arvensis Murr., syn. Viola tricolor var. arvensis (Murr.) Boiss.) est une plante de la famille des Violacées.
C'est une plante annuelle basse de 10 à 30 cm, poilue, aux feuilles oblongues, aux stipules pennatilobés avec un grand lobe terminal, aux fleurs petites blanc crème avec le pétale supérieur parfois bleu violet. L'inférieur est taché de jaune. Les sépales sont au moins aussi long que les pétales. L'éperon dépasse un peu les appendices du calice.
