[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Cetonia aurata, known as the rose chafer, or more rarely as the green rose chafer, is a reasonably large beetle, 20 mm (¾ in) long, that has metallic green coloration (but can be bronze, copper, violet, blue/black or grey) with a distinct V shaped scutellum, the small triangular area between the wing cases just below the thorax, and having several other irregular small white lines and marks. The underside is a coppery colour. Rose chafers are capable of very fast flight; they do it with their wing cases down thus resembling a bumble bee. They feed on flowers, nectar and pollen, in particular roses (from where they get their name); which is where they can be found on warm sunny days, between May and June/July, occasionally to September.
Rose chafers are found over southern and central Europe and the southern part the UK where they seem to be sometimes very localized. They are a very beneficial saprophagous species (detritivore), their larvae are the insect equivalent of earth worms and help make very good compost where they are often found in great numbers. --------------------------------------------------------

Hi Catherine,

You did a nice close-up of this bug. I like the light from you photo as it renders nice color tones. The briliant colors of the beetle makes a nice contrast with the less shany colors of the flower and blurry background. Good DOF shovingdetails of the front part of insect's body.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

hello Catherine,

This is an excellent macro showing super details of the chafer. I never realised how hairy, almost furry, they are! He shows up very well against the softly blurred b/g.

Kind regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Catherine,
Brilliant close-up of this Rose Chafer. We have this beetle here too in the summer, but I've not managed to get a really good capture of it. You've captured it from a very fine angle showing sharp details and the beautiful metallic colours. Very well composed too.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

This is the second time I'm visiting your gallery, Catherine...I find it very beautifully full of lovely shots.
This one is very sharp, and the macro brings out the vibrant colours beautifully!
Cheers!
