[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This funny guy seems to be a Lixus angustatus (subfamily of Lixinae), a beetle of the Curculionidae family, the "true" weevils (or snout beetles). With over 60,000 species described worldwide, it is the largest of the beetle families.
They are recognized by their distinctive long snout and geniculate antennae with small clubs; beyond that curculionids have considerable diversity of form and size, with adult lengths ranging from 1 mm to 40 mm.
Weevils are almost entirely plant feeders, and most species are associated with a narrow range of hosts, in many cases only living on a single species.
Lixinae is a subfamily of weevils. They are mainly root feeders, although some develop in flower buds or stems. Characteristics include tarsal claws that are fused at the base, and labial palps are short and telescoping. The body is elongate shape, as for some other weevils. Each tibia bears an uncus (small hook) on its distal end. The rostrum is forwardly directed.
---------------------------
