The caterpillar of the Cinnabar moth (Tyria jacobaeae) of the Arctiidae family is found in Europe and western and central Asia. It has been introduced into New Zealand, Australia and North America to control poisonous ragwort, which its larvae feed on. Cinnabar moths are day-flying insects.
The larvae use members of the genus Senecio as foodplants. The bright colours of both the larvae and the moths act as a warning sign so that they are seldom eaten by predators.
Initially the larvae are pale yellow but later larval stages develop the jet black and orange/yellow striped colouring. They feed ravenously and can grow up to 40mm. Cinnabar caterpillars are voracious eaters and large populations can strip entire patches of ragwort clean, a result of their low predation. (Wikipedia)

Hi catherine,

What a beautifull photo. First of all the nice and saturated colors strike you. Then viewer is surprised by the excelent DOF and therefore nice rendering of details from larvaes body as well as flowers. Composition is also very good and the black-orange larvae on the orange flowers with black spots look great.

Congratulations,
Cristian

Hi Catherine, good composition, the caterpillars have excellent detail and colouration. The background is excellent, letting the plants and caterpillars stand out to their best. Excellent POV and DoF.. regards h

Hello Catherine,
What a wonderful splash of colour!! Pity about the flowers being eaten by the larvae but they certainly posed very nicely for you!
Brilliant capture in beautiful light and colours. Detatils are very clear and stand out against the soft green background. A very fine composition too.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Catherine,
Great capture of the Cinnabar moth caterpillars on Ragwort, showing up sharply and well against a neutral BG in a fine composition.
I find these caterpillars interesting, as they take up the poisons of the Ragwort and display their inedibility by their warning colours. They can also be quite camouflged when they curl up on the flowers while resting.
Thanks for sharing this delight,
Ivan

Hi Catherine, splendid composition with a lot of caterpillars and beautiful flowers, fantastic details, wonderful colors and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hi Catherine,
the caterpillars look good. And they are so different from the Cinnabar Moth too. Good composition and details. Well done.

Hi Catherine, again,
I did'nt comment on this one. But my compliment to you: you find unusual subjects and you put them in a natural context. Again, all is perfect, light, background, DOF. Very well done, Catherine.
Best regards
Dietrich

Bonsoir Catherine
L'ensemble est très beau à mon gout.
Les couleurs 'tons sur tons', sont bien rendues.
Les voraces sont gourmandes, c'est ainsi.
merci pour ce tableau
Amicalement
Laurent
