Greater Scaup
Aythya marila
Some obvious criteria allow an easy recognition: at any age, it has a massive silhouette, a broad nozzle and a round cranium. The male has the head, chest and a back of the body that be black and so contrasting particularly with the gray top, the white belly and sides. The female is brown tern with a broad white ring at the base of the nozzle. Some discrete white spots are present near the nozzle. The youthful ones are characterized by an absence of white to the head, which involves sometimes confusion with the fuligule tufted duck. |
