This is a kookaburra, this shot is taken in a wildlife parck called the olmense zoo, the animals have alot of space there. For example, the apes have an island of there own, so do the zebras and other african animals, the lions and tigers have an islan to, but ofcours behind a wall, so you have to go on tairs to see them and you can't disturb them that way.
here's is some information 'bout the birdie :o)

Kookaburras, known as the Laughing Jackasses of Australia, are from the family Kingfishers. Similar to other kingfishers, Kookaburras have a stout and compact body, short neck, rather long and pointed bill and short legs.

The Australian aborigines have a legend about the Kookaburra. When the sun rose for the first time, the god Bayame ordered the kookaburra to utter its loud, almost human laughter in order to wake up mankind so that they should not miss the wonderful sunrise. The aborigines also believed that any child who insulted a kookaburra would grow an extra slanting tooth.

Hello Kristen, thank you for the informative note! I think this is a wonderful portrait of the kookaburra, it looks like it is posing for you and almost smiling! Good job!

Ha ha, excellent title! I think you picked a tough one here due to the white of the bird and the dark areas around it. You carried it off very well - I think the bird could've been sharper but at 1/52 maybe a little camera shake?

Well done Kirsten and thanks for taking the time to write a good note.

Wow... that title small lady... surely more length than the bird... jejeje.
Beautiful exemplary captured with very good colorful and sharpness.
The bottom did not help much in this case to have one more a cleaner glance of the bird, but the presentation is really very good, like your notes.

Hi Kirsten
I have said before that this is my favourite Aussie "fisher". Very nice capture. Something to watch for - there is a branch "running" through his head. This is very distracting, try to move around to avoid it. This is not always feasible, I know, I shot a cheetah today with a tree out of the head, but I knew I was doing it because he was behind a fence and I had to use only one POV.

Very nice picture Kristen.
Good colours , nice details and a good note.
It's a bit soft , maybe Ricardo is right about camera shake.
It's rule of thumb, use a shutter speed sa long as your lens.
Ex. 100mm lens use 1/125 sec,
If you use a camera with a long zoom you have to think about it.
Well done.

We should have these birds all over the world! Some people seem like they dont know what laughter is and that their faces will crack when they laugh (Maybe it would:).

The image is great and I like the exposure and lighting.

Thanks for posting

My goodness, a lot of information you have on this little bird - that I have never seen or heard of before. I should go to the zoo more often I guess. Nice and clear and detailed shot.

Kirsten, great shot, as usual.

The bird seems too serious. Don't you think so?

Regards.

Lívio

That's a nice sharp one, girly !
Great shot and an interesting story,
nice done !

Good capture. DOF is great. Clear and sharp photo

Very nice shot with excelent focus and great details from this pretty and strange bird.

Nice koka, thank God you couldnt post the sound they make, its really cool but if its spontaineous behind you makes a good recipe for heart attack. Maybe you have another pic with another angle, more daring, this one is a bit of a ,,scientific portrait,,. Still I love it !

This is such a nice closeup of this bird. He does look like he's posing for you. You definitely brought out his white feathers without over exposing them. Well done. I also like the foilage around him, the contrast of the greenery shows him off well.
