A bran-new male Anthophora plumipes. It got its name "Hairy-Footed Spring bee" from the strange shape of its middle legs - very visible in this picture.
As is the rule with solitary bees, males emerge earlier than females (approx two weeks on average)
and wait for them.
Anthophora look superficially like bumblebees, but they are more rounded and fly faster (amongst many other differences). |
