This time something really big! ;>

Japanese Oak Silkmoth Antheraea yamamai (Guérin-Méneville, 1861) (Lepidoptera: Saturniidae). This species has a wingspan 110-152mm what makes it one of the bigger moth species known from Europe. Thanks to their huge wings and night activity these moths are sometimes mistaken with.. bats!!! :>

Originally it comes from Far East (described from Japan), and later it was introduced to Europe, Sri Lanka and India.

History of European population of this moth was described with details by Slovenian Bostjan Dvorak, who noted this species for the first time in August 1868 from Veliki Slatnik near Novo Mesto (Slovenia). Specimens observed by him in nature were deserters from local teacher’s moth breeding. Since that moment A. yamamai has been recorded from 9 other European counties, including Austria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Macedonia, Serbia, Romania, and Germany (from last two coutries it was recorded for the first time after 2001).

It inhabits usually forests on lowlands where caterpillar host plants can be found (mainly trees from families Fagaceae and Corylaceae: Quercus spp., Fagus sylvatica, Castanea sativa, Carpinus spp., or plants belonging to family Rosaceae: Rosa spp., Crataegus spp.).

A. yamamai can be observed usually from the second week of August to late September and has only one generation per year.

This not very natural pose of this specimen is a result of our "night hunting" with power generator. This night about 15 individuals were atracted to light what really looked like "moths' incurtion" :>

I hope you will like it :>

Hej,
Hmmm... z tym zdjeciem to jest klopot pewien. A wlasciwie dwa klopoty.

Porownaj kolor z tymi, ktore masz w gablotce.

Dlatego z bolem serca ale fotka niespecjalnie przypada mi do gustu. Zwlaszcza w porownaniu z poziomem innych, ktore prezentujesz.
Serdecznosci,
Michal

Wow, Radomir.
What a beauty!
The colors are so subtle, yet just gorgeous.
Excellent focus and exposure.
You might try to frame the moth diagonally in your viewfnder for a more fetching composition.

Ricardo

Excellent capture of this enormous species Radomir with good focus and sharpness, showing the details of the same one very well.
Two comments... personally I had rotated the original lightly (20° for example) to break the symmetry of the image and I believe that you should regulate the power of the flash or to use some domestic diffuser to diminish the impact from the same one to so short distance.
It is pleasing to return to TN to find macros like this.
Greetings from Buenos Aires... Ricardo

Hi Radomir,
Excellen!! Great colors and patterns. I love the details and the exposure control.
TFS!!

Ładne ujęcie - choć niestety troszkę "przepalone" lampą błyskową. Robienie zdjęć owadom nie jest niestety proste ;-)
Pozdrawiam
