Gentiana verna L.

The Spring Gentian (Gentiana verna) is a species of the genus Gentiana and one of its smallest members, normally only growing to a height of a few centimetres. The short stem supports up to three opposing pairs of elliptical or lanceolate leaves. The conspicuous vivid blue (sometimes purplish-red or rarely white) flowers are 1-2 cm diameter, with a deeply five-lobed corolla; they are produced in late spring to early summer. The flowers attract butterflies, bees (particularly bumblebees) for pollination. Ants are responsible for the spreading of its seeds.

The Spring Gentian is to be found on sunny alpine meadows and moorland throughout central and southeastern Europe, such as in low mountain ranges like the Jura and Balkans, and up to an altitude of 2,600 m, and also very locally in northwest Europe (northern England, western Ireland). It tends to thrive on dry meadows with chalky soil; it is also known to grow in silicaceous soils. It is protected in a number of European countries as an endangered species.

Another species of Gentiana in my country: Gentiana utriculosa L.

Scientific classification

Kingdom: Plantae

Division: Magnoliophyta

Class: Magnoliopsida

Order: Gentianales

Family: Gentianaceae

Genus: Gentiana

Species: G. verna

To my exceptionally untrained eye this looks like an iris. :) Great color, lighting and processing.

The white center of the lower flower is overexposed but the rest of the image looks great.

Hello Ena,
A beautiful flower, very soft and my favorite blue. The stamens do not bother me being burnt out as the remainder of the scene would have been too dark if you would have adjusted for the difference.
Excellent DoF also,
Steve

Hi Ena

Lovely macro with great colours and detail. I always find shots like this difficult as there is always some breeze.

Hi Ena,
The Spring Gentian it is a very pretty species that we have in the Pyrenees.
Salut. Ferran

Hello Ena,

Beautiful fragile blue petals with white stamen contrasting well with the green background. Well managed light and shadow in superb sharpness of the image.

Jusni

Ciao Ena,grandissima foto,di una perfezione assoluta come messa a fuoco e colori, veramente un gioiellino, grazie anche per le note, ciao Luciano

Hello Ena,

A nice photo of a beautiful flower. I'd like to suggest a couple things that might improve it a little though. One, as has already been mentioned, the white center is overexposed to the point that pretty much all detail has been lost. I know how difficult it is to photograph things like this with a very wide dynamic range. It would require you to expose for the highlights and then adjust levels in Photoshop to brighten up the darker areas with a levels or curves adjustment and perhaps reduce noise as a result of brightening things up, but that's sometimes the only way to capture something like this one.

The second suggestion is to not sharpen images to the point where sharpening halos are visible on the edges of objects. If you look at the edges in your photo here, you'll see a white line bordering the edges of the flower petals, particularly on the flower on the left. Those white lines are the result of sharpening too much, and they slightly detract from the image, in my opinion.

But it is still a very nice image of a beautiful flower, and I'm glad that you shared it with us.

John

Hi Ena,

a superb clarity on the blue petals against the green BG. unfortunatey the strong lighting caused a slight OE on the flower's centre. well done!

Hi Ena.
Nice flowers and their surroundings. I like vivid colours and impressive lights, framing and composition of the shot. Only one weak point is the white spot in the heart of flower. Bit it is so difficult point for exposure and shooting of contrast subjects. My best wishes and compliments.
Alexei.

Bien reflejados los colores de esta planta Ena.

Hi Ena,
WOW! what beautiful colors these flowers have. The name reminds me of a disinfectant used for our cattles here when I was a kid "Gentian Violet". Lovely details and composition. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Very nice composition.Good POV and well composed image.Colors are outstanding.

Hi Ena,
splendid pure blue flowers. Their structure is unique and your POV is perfect to represent that. Very good composition, as well as DOF and sharpness. Though It is a little pity, that the pistil and stamens of the left flower are seem to be over-lighting.
Best regards,
Yedidia

Amazing blue flowers captured in a great way! The middle white parts are a little overexposed but it is ovious that the light is very hard and shooting is difficult. The sharpness is amazing, great shot!

Hello Ena

What a beautiful blue! The colors are well saturated and pleasing in this image.

TFS and Best

I love the blue of these Spring Gentians, the intensity of which is wonder in Nature. This is a nicely composed and sharp capture. You are lucky to have these growing in the wild in your country.
