Emerging Dragonfly
Gomphus vulgatissimus (L.) - The Common Club-tail

The Common Club-tail (Gomphus vulgatissimus) is a medium sized species with a distinctively club-shaped abdomen as suggested by its common name. Females and teneral males are mainly black with extensive yellow markings on the thorax and abdomen. The shape of the hind wing differs between the male and female and can be used to help distinguish the sex of insects.
This dragonfly is elusive as an adult, but can be seen most frequently during emergence or as a teneral insect. Once it has settled in the vegetation or upon stones, its cryptic colouration makes is difficult to observe. It can be mistaken for the Golden-ringed Dragonfly Cordulegaster boltonii, but it is much smaller and the pattern of pale markings is very different.
The Common Club-tail is the most widespread Gomphid species in Europe.

Hi Dejan.
How nice that you are here again with new shot. I have not seen anything similar. Very impressive subject, terrific unusual colour palette, great pictured moment and excellent details of the main object. I like fine POV and nice composition of the shot too. My kind regards and TFS.
Alexei.

Hi Dejan

Hi Dejan,

A fine macro of this little beast, very nicely composed, good sharpness and detail in the face especially. Nice to see a new photo from you!

John

A very good macro. A little difficult to obtain a photo when the light is small. You was forced to use F2,8 with 1/25, but the ISO ... ???
With 400D you can have a good definition till 500.

Best regards

What a great shot Dejan, would love to do this myself someday.
Interesting POV with the blue BG contrasting nicely :)
Well done!

Hi Dejan,

Absolutely excellent macro close-up, sharp as razorblade (waw, those eyes... really superb shot), nice colors. Technically perfect image. Bravo.

What I didn't understand is the name of the genera. Being an amateur mycologist, I know there's a valid genus of fungi wearing this name. I never thought there's something else under the same name... Or do I need new glasses and this is a fungus? :) Anyway, please click here to see what I mean.

Tfs, best regards from Hungary, László
