Common blue - Polyommatus icarus

Family: Lycaenidae
Flight Time: May-September
Size: 28-36mm
Altitude: 0-2700m

A very widespread species. The male pictured above has blue topsides where as the female to the right has a variable amount of brown on the topside.

Most blues can quickly be differentiated by look at the underside forewing which has a spot in cell on the common blue.

Bravo for this very clear picture of Polyommatus icarus ♂!

Hi Dario,
The natural backlighting highlights the ciliate fringes of the wings very well, even though the main surface of the wings is a bit dark by comparison. A little fill-in flash might have helped here. Thanks.
Alan
