Diplolepis rosae - Bedeguar gall, Robin's pinchusion
Family: Cynipidae - Gall wasps
Order: Hymenoptera

Gall wasps are small ant-like insects with laterally compressed abdomen and distinct venation of wings. Sometimes they are wingless. They induce gall formation in plants. Female lays eggs in the leaf or stem, and when egg hatch the surrounding tissue swell up around the grubs to form the galls. The larvae thrive on the nutritous tissues. The insects always pupate in galls and spend the winter there. Many species have complex life cycles including the alternation of bisexual and parthenogenetic generations.

Diplolepis rosae causes galls in wild roses. Galls mature late autumn. The female lay eggs without mating - males are very rare. The species is very common in almost entire Europe.

By the way, the Polish name of that species is a true tongue-twister. Just try: szypszyniec różany :-)

Critiques [Translate]

I saw galls in quercus species around here. Cca 2 cm wide, spherical. I had the impresion that true wasps are the ones that does them. I never saw the insects (or probably I did but I didn't know what they're doing).
This looks different. Looks like moss.

Very strange gall Michal. Most of galls which I saw was on oak leaves. Very interesting picture and note. I'm going to search photo of this Gall wasp immidiately ;-)
