Do you think that these are just some another "normal" rocks? Just another case of "typical" erosion? It is a great pleasure for me to say: NO! :>

Here we are in very unique place and can see Lower Eocene Bubbling Reefs, and the oficial name of it is Pobite Kamani Natural Reserve, or Stone Forest in English.

Pobiti Kamani means "stones beaten into the ground", and this name is absulutelly correct if you look at this area and read about history of this place.

So why this place is so unique???

About 50 million years ago this place was at 70m deep into the sea, completely covered with waters.
These carbonate - cemented sandstone structures were formed due to microbial methane oxidation by blue-green algae and bacteria concerned around natural gas seepages (please note the "free space" in stones placed on the right side of photo!), and thanks to that the name "bubbling reefs" is given.

As for now there is no similar phenomenon discovered on the land in the world (even if such areas are perfectly known from deep waters of present seas and oceans, eg. in Denmark).

Pobite Kamani are characterized by numerous limestone pillars as high as 10 m, hollow or solid cylinders, truncated cones, different bulgings and single rocks and cliffs. The area takes place about 3 km wide and 8 km long and now it is lobbing to be included in the UNESCO World List of Geological Forms.

For the centuries the natural erosion by wind and water was shaping the stones, to turn them into different, often very unique and interesting structures similar to animals, peoples, monsters, mythical creatures, ect. Today some of them have special names like: "The Stone Guardians", "The Camel", "The Throne", "The Big Falos", and many others...

Nice composition. Clarity of the sky and hardness of a stone - interesting combination.

Hi Radomir,
Great location you've found here, fascinating rock formations with equally fascinating history behind them. You POV is very good and shows them all off in the best way. Detail and exposure are excellent and the tree adds a nice feature to the BG.
I think these stones would look even more dramatic when shot at sunrise or sunset, with some low golden lighting and perhaps a vividly coloured sky? Wish i could go there to find out! Very fine work and as always an educational post - thanks!
Paul

Now that is some serious geology and geography. The picture and notes combined make a perfect lesson. You are a man with a mission and a tenacious, well trained, educated person with talents.

Hi Radziu

Thanks for sharing.

Cześć Radziu
Jak zwykle interesująca prezentacja, do fajnego zdjęcia.
Zdjęcie świetne, dobrze skomponowane i technicznie bez zarzutu :)
Pozdrawiam
Ania

Hello Radomir,
Without reading your note it would be impossible to guess the origin of these limestone "monuments". Very interesting and your capture is an excellent illustation.
I like your composition which is well planned. very sharp and the colours natural.
Many thanks and regards, Ulla

Hello Radomir
The rock formations you show are very interesting and especially the way they have been eroding to show their history. Nicly captured, it would be great to get a close up to show more detail in the rock.

Hi Radomir,
The capture is very good to show this wonders of mother nature. Very nice & informative notes too. I like the way you presented it. But I want give you a suggestion. It will be more better if you have posted a close up of the beautiful rock as inset or in WS. But it is just my personal opinion. Thanks a lot for sharing.

Hi Radomir,
A great shot showing something very unusual. Very well composed.

What interesting notes Radomir. And so are the sandstone structures that you are showing us. Quite amazing to read and see. We have limestone areas in NZ that were once under water, and these seem even more interesting,

Hello Radomir,
fascinating structures! I would never have thought of their natural origin but certainly of ancient architecture. Very well recorded and presented contribution with perfect notes.
Thank you! With best regards,
Peter

Hi Radomir,
Great post and notes on how these "Bubbling" reef stone formations came to be..
An odd fact that this is the only place in the world where this has occurred?
Well done & have a great weekend,
Howard
