Macroglossum stellatarum (Linnaeus, 1758) - Humming-bird Hawk-moth (Family: Sphingidae)

Wingspan: 40-45mm. Not prone to much variation though sometimes very pale, albinistic specimens occur, as do individuals with blackish brown abdomens and hindwings (f. subnubila Schultz).

Thie species is a day flying moth occuring from southern Europe and North Africa to Central Asia, the Altai Mountains, the Middle East and Pakistan. However I was surprise to see it that high in the mountains. The larva feeds on various species of herbaceous plants, principally of the Rubiaceae, Valerianaceae and Caryophyllaceae.

I shot this unusual butterfly in the Pirin Mountains, some 2300 m above sea level. It was in the morning and the temperature was still low - that's probably why I could approach this moth. I know the picture has some technical flaws but still I like it :-)

Hi Michal, another nice shot :). The BG could be perhaps a bit more OOF but you've done a great job with this capture. The moth is sharp, you have frozen its motion perfectly and its a good composition. Well done :)

Pieknie! Doskonale zlapany moment, wiem jak trudno zrobic cos takiego! Technicznie nie jest moze super, ale najwazniejsze, ze zlapates dobrze widoczna cme. Mam podobne zdjecia z Krymy, ale tam te cmy byly wielkosci wrobli ;-)
