[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Do you remember my last "larval" presentation about? I wrote some words about different types of insect larvae with some basic features which allow to recognize them for the first view (details are here).

According to this clasification here we have a nymph, the only one type of larva known in Orthoptera. The species ID was possible thanks to Dietrich (meyerd) - most probably it is Acrotylus insubricus family Acrididae.

But today I do not want to write more about insect larvae :) This is my first Orthoptera picture presented on TN so maybe a few records found in some species belonging to this interesting group of arthropods :)

1.The longest insect migration
Yes, the longest! :> An African desert locust Schistocerca gregaria is the champion here! Marked specimens recorded in Africa in October were found later in the some month on some Carribean islans and parts of the east coast South America (this is a distance of about 4500 km during only 30 days!!!). It was possible probably thanks to a tropical wave pattern). To compare, the most known world insect migrator - a butterfly Danaus plexippus, travelling "only" about 4000 km :)

2.The bigest - the smallest
Really in the world there are some bigger insects - like members of eg. Phasmida order (up to 55cm!) and also smaller - lot of different species from different orders, but in Orthoptera it is one of the biggest world insect species - Proscopia gigantea up to 25 cm!!! To compare, one of the smallest orthopterans have only about 1.5 mm - like members of subfamily Gryllidae: Myrmecophilinae living in ants colonies.

3. "Cold lover"
Also in this category there are some other insect group which can survive really low temperatures, but there are not many which can survive freezing!!! A perfect exapmles among Orthoptera are New Zealand alpine weta species - Hemideina maori and H. thoracica (Stenopelmatidae). Both of them are able to survive the formation of some ice in their bodies!!!


Well, the specimen from the photo is not so huge (some 8-10mm), does not migrate for long distances (even if it jumpped for 40-60 cm every time I came next to it with my camera), and does not like so low temperatures (it was photographed in rather hot place where temperature under the ground was about 40C), but I believe that also this one is a champion. Even if only in the category: "camouflage" ;>

excellent detail and exposure, you can see how this guys markings really help him blend in with his environment. Very precise DOF and focus with, as always, very interesting and informative notes. What an amazing migration! This is a perfect TN posting, thanks for sharing and have a good day!

Fajna fotka i super zwierzak. Fajne wloski na nogach. Wszystko swietnie widoczne, ostrosc swietna. Podoba mi sie pokazany kamuflaz. Mozna by troche podciagnac kontrast ale z drugiej strony to mogloby popsuc te fotke wiec moze lepiej tego nie ruszac (Ale sprawdzic zawsze mozna :-)

Certainly a complete lesson. As to the picture, he is well camouflaged eh? It is like "Where is Waldo?". And yet he still sticks out in his sharp array. You have a good eye and the tenacious method of gathering information. Wonderful notes.

Wonderful shot of this 'little jumper', perfectly camouflaged and looking great. Very sharp image with the pebbles forming a nice BG. Spot-on focus and DOF. I like your low POV and the superb composition. Kudos.

As usual with you, the above image is very well executed and shows something really interesting. Well done, and thanks.
My guess is that you have Acrotylus, maybe A. insubricus (the two kerbs in the pronotum and the white and black spots on the body suggest it). I used H. Bellmann, 2006. Der Kosmos Heuschreckenführer. Kosmos, Stuttgart vor inspiration.

What a little beauty, and perfectly portrayed in the sand!! Sharp details of the fascinating pattern and very nice camouflage colours. I bet it wasn't that easy to capture! Ivan and I had a period when we concentrated on photographing grasshoppers, it was hard work, not only because they jump away all the time but you really have to get down low on the ground too. So very well done! Interesting note too!

Hello Radomir,
I love shots of camouflaged insects and this shot of a grey grasshopper nymph well hidden in the fine gravel is no exception. Excellent detail and the sharpness allows it to show against the OOF similar BG. great use of fill-in flash.

Hi Radomir,
A great close up lok at this well camouflaged grasshopper.
Although this is a 'warm place' one,it looks very similar to some of our alpine grasshoppers.
Interesting not about the freezing Weta too.
I had already read about that in New Zealand Geographic.

Great example of camouflage here I must say.
Nice detail, DOF, and a well composed closeup frame.
I did a WS to try and make it stand out a bit more..or less camouflaged, whichever you prefer :)

This is a good shot because you actually realised there was a nymph there, because I myself would have no clue because of it's wonderful camouflage! :)
It has wonderful POV ad DOF, a great shot!

Another reason why I clicked on this picture is because I saw the word `Bulgaria`, and that is where I am going on holiday sometime soon! AND I AM VERY EXCITED!! :D

A lovely grasshopper with prominent details. I am fascinated by the size of the wings. I have read about it somewhere but ask me what is was, and I cannot tell you. I am glad to see that your grasshopper has a name. I am still waiting patiently as mine stays unidentified. This grasshopper is really beautiful. (That is if hoppers can be beautiful) The patterns are quite remarkable, but what attracts my eye the most is the fine hair on its body and the way it stands up straight and glows in the light. Lovely big eye. I like the surface you have captured it on, this together with the colours of the hopper makes a lovely combination. Well framed with good point of view and good focus. It was a pleasure to look at. Thanks for sharing.
