I found a few of these insects on the ground and on the tree. The closest visual match to the insect I could find it the milkweed bug. There's a description here:

However, I don't recall seeing milkweed near by. Also, the details on these insects were a little more intricate (see the pattern in the photo). Perhaps the photos I have seen were the American variety and this is an Eastern European one.
If you have a better idea of what this insect might be, I'd love to know.
