Chrysomela populi - Poplar Leaf-beetle
This 10-12 mm long beetle is a member of the family Chrysomelidae and is found nearly everywhere on the northern hemisphere. Its wing covers are yellowish brown to red, the head, thorax and legs are black. The adult beetles hibernate in the ground and come back up in April. They are most numerous in June and July. The females lay their eggs on the underside of young poplar, aspen or willow leaves. The adult beetles as well as the larvae feed on the leaves of these trees. When disturbed, the beetles excrete a smelly substance.

Hi Karel,
I hope, you have not disturbed!
In these days I see a lot of beetles in love, perhaps I also show a couple tomorrow.
Your photo has perfect DOF and a nice arangement. I tried a workshop for you, hope you don't mind, bye

Hi Karel,
why only 2 points after being viewed so many times? I don't understand. The picture has many qualities rarely found elsewhere. I think the contrast of light and shadow, the contre-jour, the composition are marvellous. The beetles are sharp, the background is nicely out of focus. And to me important: this is a beautiful beetle not often seen, and it's in full "action". You did very well and I congratulate you for the result. Thanks for the note and for the presentation of the picture. I like the workshop version of Sabine too.
My best regards
Dietrich
