Purple emperor (Apatura iris) - male

Family: Nymphalidae
Flight Time: June - August
Size: 62-74mm

I found the nice butterfly only three times in my life, but always on cattle excrements. I would make photo on more attractive background, but the butterfly back always to same place :-(

Hi Jan,

This is one of the most spectacular butterflies to roam our lands. About the background, well, everybody has its cullinary preferences. :-)

This specie loves some altitude. It is not common but also not rare too along the water streams and meadows of our mountains and forests.

Regards, Petru

Very good photo of this beautiful butterfly!
Fantastic colours!
Very good POV!
Excellent on details!
Very rare in Portugal.
Keep on going and TFS!

Hi Jan

Fantastic shot. Good POV and light. Lovely depth of colour. Tack sharp with crisp, clear details. Good work. Thanks.

Hello Jan,
excellent picture report of that rare and beautiful species in action. Point of view very well chosen. Details and colours very good.
I know the species from one location near to Korneuburg a few kilometres north of Vienna. There I've had a good chance to observe it together with Apatura ilia in early July since many years. I confirm the species is very fond of excrements, never seen it feeding on anything else. And yes, it defends its territory and always returns, that's the good news for a photographer. Once I had one landing and sucking on my arm: well - not a compliment for me, but not knowing its habit at that time I was very fond of that. Excellent contribution. Best regards,
Peter

Jan:
Cowpat or not, you have been fortunate to get the opportunity to get this close. This beautiful species is incredibly hard to find in the UK, and I've never succeeded in getting this close.
Well done! Nigel.

Hi Jan!
Your concern for this butterfly's preferences notwithstanding, you have got a masterpiece of a shot here. I have never seen a butterfly with two diametrically diffrent colours on its wings and the blue on this one is absolutely lovely.
Regards,
Ram

Well what can I say, a butterfly that like s cow poo, amazing.
Good POV and action extracting liquid from the poo, yuk, but I suppose this species must get something out of it. I gues it would have too many other insects competing for this food source!
Great sharpness and colours.

Hi Jan!
These butterflies like excrements very much. I found them few times but also always on these disguisting things ;-) Blue wings look great, POV is excellent - we see both surfaces of wings. Bon apetite, poor butterfly ;-)

A very nice capture Jan,
Great colours and excellent detail.
The POV is great, showing both the top and underside of the wings.
It has unusual feeding habits,I'm sure a flower would taste a lot nicer!
Great work,well done.

very nice ,good job thanks, greeting Teunie .

I don't even notice the background, the butterfly is too well captured and beautiful! A wonderful POV that allows us to see both sides of the wing. What a stunning creature, saw these for the first time last year and can't wait to see them again!

Great work!

An excellent capture of this amazing b'fly, Jan.

Details, colors, POV and exposure are wonderful.

BG not so great, but I understand... :-(

Well done and thank you!

I see them quite often because surprisingly they are quite common in my neighbourhood though they are quite rare in Poland. Despite that I have only few pictures because I had the same problem as you. It's really difficult to find them somewhere else than in these, not very photogenic places ;)
Great picture, btw.

Wow ! What a wonderful and interesting butterfly that you have very well captured ! One time also I caught a butterfly on excrements ;-) Congratulations Jan and thanks for sharing.

What a beautiful photo.
It is so clear, so right sharp with nice colors and the backgraund is exact clear and sharp that gives the exact contrast and dose not steal the look.

I've noticed thay you've the same hobby ;-D
The picture is perfect inall the details - thanks

Chris
