Sail Swallowtail - Pear-tree Swallowtail.

Why wonder?
Because this kind is in danger! Because of using chemicals in agriculture.
My 1st Iphiclides in Czech Republic I saw before couple of days.
It was on the greegrounds near Prague.
Very fast flying butterfly, and beetween sitting it flies very long way, not just couple of meters like his small butterfly brothers.
I made just few photos, because I had no time. He flyed away in the moment.

It generally has a wingspan from 70 to 80mm.

Geographical distribution/ habitat: The Central and South of Europe, especially the warm and hot regions. Prefers hilly areas and flowery hamlets where lots of individual bushes grow. Large numbers of males often fly together round hilltops.

Host plants: Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa), and other domesticated Prunus species, but also Pyrus, Malus, Sorbus, Crataegus spp.

Food plants: An avid nectar feeder, partial to lavender flowers especially.

Flight time: Usually two broods a year, on the wing in April-May and in September.

Thanks for looking!

PS: the grass in the right corner is my kind of design, sometimes when you place some subject acros the view it looks more wild.

Hi Tom,
Very nice shot, excellent detail and colours, just a shame about that stray blade of grass across the bottom right. It's sad to read that this Butterfly is endangered as well. Nice shot and interesting note.
Regards,
Adrian

Hallo Tom und Martina, good approach and excellent depth of field. Unfortunately the tails are covered by the grass leaf. But this is the natural setting. The Maniola jurtina which I posted today is presented with cut-off antennae.
Peter

Hello Tom, good capture of this showy specimen with good colour and focus on the body. I was just about to mention the grass when I seen your note mentioning it was by design. I get your point as its nice to see change. Well done.
