[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a Yellow Dung fly Scatophaga stercoraria, a male of the breed. These flies are 8-9 mm long. Males are covered with golden yellow fur. Females are greyish and less furry. They live in places where there is dung from horses and cows across Europe, according to the information I've been able to find. From my own observations I can add, that they also seem to thrive very well on dog shit, which is the diet our local ones mainly have to live on..
Adults fly for much of the year; preying on other flies on cow-dung. Adults develop in cow-pats.
There are a large number of flies which are commonly associated with dung. In the north temperate areas (that's most of Europe and a fair portion of North America) this means mostly cow, horse, pig and sheep dung. The Sepsidae and Borboridae feed on the dung as both larvae and adults and various species from both families will make up most of the small black flies which fly up if you disturb a fresh cow pat. The Scatophagidae are the Dung-flies (i.e. the yellow and grey hairy flies you can find all over grassy fields). The Common Yellow Dung Fly Scathophaga stercoraria is a typical example of this family and though their larva feed on the dung. The adults are predatory and feed on other flies which have come to the dung to feed.
As you can see in this photo, they have quite a honker (correct terminology would make that a probosis) with which to feed on any juicy dollop of dung they may pass by ;-))

It was funny to read that title. It's not a sh*t picture, it's excellent. Such detail - light is excellent as is the composition. It's all good.

The image is really excellent, but the fly looks horrible so close... Reminds me of that movie with Jeff Goldblum where in a man was physically and mentally transforming into a fly. (Brrrr...) Great work Bente!

I would say you did everything right! How would it looked mirrored, looking up? Just a suggestion.

Very crispy shot Bente - Colours and dof are spot on. The composition is perfect. Do I have to say that the note is very informative too;-).
