Our black-headed gulls Larus ridibundus are back again, now in winter plumage without the chocolate brown hoods of summer which give them their name. For winter plumage the hood is replaced by a dark spot on the cheek. Length about 35-39 cm, weight about 230-260 gram, wingspan some 86-99 cm. Red bill and feet. Young birds have a narrow dark band on the tip of the tail, so this one is a grown up.

We've had very little sun lately, so as soon as I spotted the first rays around midday, Milloup and I were off with the camera down to the lake. In the lake were a group of ducks, so I threw in a handful of bread hoping to lure a few to come over to our side. They just wouldn't.. Instead came first one gull, then a few more, and soon there was a group of some 20 zooming about looking hungrily at the bread in the water. Eventually, one took a plunge at the bread, and I got a great shot of a wing-amputated gull - it was simply too close to the camera. Apart from that it's a great shot ;-). I'd forgotten from last year how swift these birds are when they come in diving for bread in the water and how long their wings are when pointing upwards.. Of the shots showing birds with no amputations this is the one I like the best, so that is what you get. Hope you like it ;-)
Exposure compensation -1/3.

Good action shot MBente. You guys sure are lucky to have these gulls near you. We are about 600 miles (1000kms) from where they are in South Africa so we have to show you guys what we have here close to us.

Good post

Very good Bente.
I never seen them in the winter plumage, we have them only in the summer.
Good action and a very good note.
Well done.

Great action shot.

Una hermosa composicion en movimiento con atinados valores de esposicion.
La nitidez principalmente en el pico y patas es maravillosa.
Me hubiera agradado un recorte superior y abajo mostrar la totalidad de la reflexion.
Has utilizado trípode?.

A beautiful composition in movement with accurate values of esposure.
The clearness mainly in the beak and legs is wonderful.
I had pleased me a superior crop and down to show the totality of the reflection.
Do you have used tripod?.

Nice post, I would like to see the whole reflection but you got a very nice and moody lighting and perfect timing.
I will be as critic as posible, hope you do the same when you critic my shots, I think that is the way to learn from other people opinions. Thanks.

Excellent shot Bente - I didn't even try to get out there today. The shot is very clear and the handling of the light is just perfect - no burning and lot of details. Only nit - as the others says, a full reflection in the water and it would be perfect. Well, you cann't always get it as you wish;-). See you around.

My, my...this is a beauty! Wonderful action and even a lovely reflection in the water. Great capture, Bente!

Exceptional moment captured Bente! Shown the instant before striking with the added effect of the birds reflection is very, very nice.

Nice shot, it would have been good to get the full water reflection, and to crop out the upper part that'S not usefull.

His is a great moment that you captured very well. The sharpness is good and I love this composition.

Very well done and thanks for posting

Very, very good shot. It'll be better to catch the reflection too.. but I know there is no time to change.

Superb action-shot, nice Bente, really nice shot !

Hi Bente
So good to see you posting again, and such a swell beauty too. Love the mood here, the action etc. And cutting off wings, why, that is what they are there for, and tails, and heads. I got a beautiful bateleur, doing the wings above the head shrug, and . . . the top of the wings is missing. But I will post it antway later.

Great action shot, Bente. The refection and light makes this one special. Very nice in flight shot. Well done.

Glad to see you and Milloup out with the camera again, I will say it again the TN has been poorer for you not posting here.
This is an excelent capture the head and body are razor sharp and the wings have enough movement in them to give the image energy as to slows to grab the food.
I would agree with Mogens and Filipe about the missing bit of the refection, but that just means its a superb shot instead of an absolutly brilliant shot if you get what I mean, put it this way there is no way could I get this shot myself. Nice one Bente.

Salut Bente!
Merci

Hi Bente,
Thats really action, well spotted with beautiful low winter sun. Kind of shot I'd like to realize :-). I like the colors on the beak and the legs, the deep blue and the superb timing. I red "Milloup and I were off..." Is it your dog?

Good action shot Bente,
I think with a better focus on the gull, it'll be perfect.
Good colors.
Thanks for the note and sharing.
