[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
We have problems with our internet connection at present. It works at times, then dies completely for periods ranging from a few minutes and up to several hours at a time. Pretty annoying, and the guys in charge *are* getting their rears roasted, I'm seeing to that ;-))
Anyway, I was trying to locate further information on these two to add to the note, but I got pretty tired of meeting the laconic message "Server not found", so I gave it up for the time being.

A sweet reminiscence of summer, warm days spent in the sun chasing elusive dragonflies and occasionally striking it lucky, wading around in muddy water that does not always smell of roses - in fact, far from often does - or kneeling on soggy turf and spending hours afterwards getting the aching back straightened out again while the dirty pants spin in the washing machine. Why on earth do we do that, I wonder; just one of the dangers of being a bug-a-holic, I reckon ;-))

I'm a bit in doubt as to whether these two lovebirds are in fact Vagrant darters Sympetrum vulgatum or Common darters Sympetrum striolatum. I pinched this off one of Mogens' notes:

"There are three sure ways to identify a Vagrant darter:
1. The legs are black and yellow.
2. The black line upon the eyes is continuing down along the inside of the eyes.
3. The vagina appendix is very big and bends out from the body in 90 degrees.

The Vagrant darter can be mistaken for Sympetrum striolatum (Common darter) as they have the same colours, but the Common darter is bigger and the black line upon the eyes does not continue down along the inside of the eyes. Also the vagina appendix is much smaller."

Okay, the legs look all black here, apart from the underside of her left front leg. This should then suggest a commoner. But on the other hand it does look as if the black line continues down beside the eye of the female, and this should indicate a vagrant. Checking point 3 is not quite possible in this photo, so it's a one-one draw. Suggestions are welcome ;-))
Treatment: Crop, brightness +10, contrast +10, saturation +10, USM and resize.

Well Bente
Whatever they were, they provided you with a great oppertunity, and us with a nice note on these critters and their way of life.
My hat off to you for the sharpnes and clarity, with the lens used. I just do NOT get the same results!

Whan an excellent macro, Bente!!! Absolutely superb. Great note too.

Well Bente, it is certainly not a Vagrant darter - the yellow marks of the legs are very vissible and on the outside of the legs, take a look here. If it is a Sympetrum striolatum or a Sympetrum sanguineum is difficult to say from the picture.

Anyway, it is a great capture - very clear with lots of lovely details and great colours. - Happy New Year and thanks for many hours in the field.
