[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
This is a grown specimen of the Wolf, Canis lupus. This is one of the 7 grown-up wolves in the Scandinavian Wildlife Park at Nødager, from where I also posted a wolf cub a while ago. Back then Callie requested that I post also a grown-up, so I thought I'd better do that.. ;-))
Looking at him from this angle he looks just like a happy, playful shepherd dog of some sort, but don't be fooled by that. He *is* a wolf.
The wolf is the ancestor of our tame dogs and the second largest carnivore, surpassed in size only by the brown bear. A wolf will grow to a length of - 1 - 1.5 meters + the tail measuring some 30-50 cm. A large male may grow to a height of 1 meter measured from the mane down, but the usual height is 75-80 cm. The weigth varies from 30 to 80 kg.
Once upon a time wolves were found all over Europe. That was back in the days when large stretches of wild woodland covered the entire continent. Today, the wolf has disappeared from most of Western and Southern Europe, but isolated populations may still be found in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, the former Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. Only in the Eastern part of Europe larger numbers may still be found.
Both Norway, Sweden and Finland still have small populations of wolves, but they are highly endangered.
In Denmark the last wolf was shot dead back in 1813.
On a worldwide scale the wolf population numbers around 100,000, and these may be found mainly in Canada, Alaska and the former Soviet Union.

It's a shame such a beautiful animal has diminished because of human population, but I guess people wouldn't be safe with then around. Very sharp clear shot, the colors of the wolf are beautiful.

I love wolves and have bought several DVD,s on these wonderful creatures. Thanks for posting this shot. Your colors, definition and DOF is great, and the eyes are even better!

I particularly like this photo having had a half wolf mix dog. Unfortunately, he was shot 3 years ago by a neighbor when he "escaped" and terrorized his loose chickens. He was the most intelligent dog I've ever had with the keenest of senses. Still miss him! You've captured the "perfect" posture/stance in a natural setting. Bravo!!

Great wolf. The colours are very good as is the composition. The background is a little noisy but not so bad it affect viewing. Nice pose and the tones in the fur are great.

WOW! This is a lovely catch. The pose is pure Wolf. Those eyes, the ears and the open mouth. Vey sharp detail. He looks right through the viewer. Great note. Thanx Bente. He looks just like my "Gimli" only difference is my dog is Artic White.

A beautiful pose you caught, Bente - and not only that, but the details and colors in the coat are really adorable. Good DOF and as always the best notes one could hope for. Well done.

Lone Wolf
Glad I browsed back, Bente, this is a beaut of a canis. One small nit, I am sure you might consider to forgive, you must leave space below his feet where they would have ended, if they did not dissapear in the grass. Crop is too close, here.

Bente, what a nice pose we have here. You captured a great pose. I like composition and sharpness, and the wolf's tongue adds a colorful detail.

Fortunately, this one of yours came back on the screen. I really like his pose and the expressive eyes. Looks like a very healthy wolf, not scared in any way. Sure he's proud. Very good colors and perfect exposure. TFS.
