[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I came across this pair of Pieris napi - Green-veined White when walking Milloup this afternoon. They were so preoccupied with each other, that I managed to coerce them onto my finger for a photo session ;-) Once they were on my finger, they just kept on minding their own business, they never stirred while I turned them around to get the best angle and light possible. It soon became clear that with their placement on my finger I couldn't get them far enough from the camera to use only the lens, I needed the +2 macro lens which has a shorter minimum focus distance. Squatting with the pair still clinging to my finger I managed to get the +2 out of its box and onto the camera using only one hand. Needless to say, all photos were also taken using only one hand for the camera ;-) After taking quite a number of shots - the first of them with flash while the sun was hidden - I gently placed the passionate lovers on a straw where they could proceed with the production of the next generation.
Size: 35 - 45mm. An extremely variable species generally distributed in the Palaearctic and ranging to North America. A great number of geographical races inhabiting this region have been described, and the species also shows marked seasonal polyphenism: in particular, the spring generation is most strongly patterned. The Green-veined White has one to three generations a year merging into each other: thus the butterfly appears on the wing practically from spring till autumn. The caterpillar lives on wild crucifers (only rarely attacking crops); the chrysalis hibernates.
Appearance: The upperwing background colour of this fairly small and delicate looking butterfly is white with the veins having a dark scaling. Both sexes have a dark tip to the forewing, although it is more pronounced on the female. Females have two spots whereas males have one. The wingspan varies between 40 and 48 mm.
Geographical distribution/ habitat: Europe through Asia and North America. Prefers fields, meadows and waysides where its host plants can be found.
Host plants: Cruciferous plants, eg. Cresses and Garlic mustard.
Food plants: Visits various flowers for nectar and is not fussy on them. In early summer though it prefers to visit dandelions and in the late summer thistles.
Treatment: Crop, brightness +5, contrast +10, saturation +10, USM and resize.

Bente, They must have been really concentrated on what they were doing. I can't imagine a giant lifting me and my wife on the back of anelephant without noticing ;-)

Congratulations with a great and very rare shot. As Robert said for some time ago - if you handle them carefully you can do almost everything. This is an excellent capture - nice and clear in every way.

I know you do not make mistakes frequently, but this time I take the liberty to make a WS on one of your pictures. I will crop out the bottom of the picture to get rid of the lower finger - hope you do not mind. - Actually you deserve more than the 2 points but....

Wow good clicking, i am sure you had fun with one hand doing all the work to cature this really good photo.

But one thing what I don't like is a finger on the photo and that's really a shame because when you got them so on a flower you have a world photo, But even nice job

What a steady finger you have! Very nice capture Bente superb detail and they are very well framed against the sky. It seems a very impersonal pairing looking in opposite directions. Well done. Great note.

Nice shot. I don't know how you manage to get this guys to cooperate and move into your finger. If I am not mistaken I have seen other passion photos. I guess love is in the air in your area. Good capture, very sharp butterflies and finger, good DOF.
