[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
These two are fruit flies, Rhagoletis suavis, of the Tephritidae family, but it's been nigh on impossible to find any information about this particular species - apart from the fact that in the USA the same species seems to go by the name of Walnut husk flies and is considered a pest to be exterminated. So, if you want to get rid of them, you can discover how by looking them up..

However, for my part I'd be more interested in learning about their way of life ;-))

I reckon they're some kind of relatives of the Thistle Stem Gall Fly, Urophora cardui which lives and breeds on thistles. These two were also caught having a whale of a time sitting on a thistle, so maybe their preferred habitat here in Denmark is that particular plant, just like their cousins.

I did, however, find one very detailed description of the Rhagoletis suavis, starting with this info:

Body. Body plump; predominantly orangish to brown.
Head. Number of frontal bristles three pairs. Number of orbital bristles two pairs. Anterior orbital bristle of male normal, unmodified. Posterior orbital bristles reclinate; acuminate. Ocellar bristles long, about as long as frontal bristles. Postocellar bristles present. With both inner and outer vertical bristles. Outer vertical, postvertical and postocellar bristles all acuminate. Postocular bristles acuminate; normal. Genal bristle present. Head higher than long (height 1.1–1.2x length). Male and female head width the same. Frontofacial angle about equal to a right angle and angular. Face flat; with distinct antennal grooves and carina, or without transverse sulcus, antennal grooves, or carina; about as long as frons; vertical; without dark marks. Parafacial spot absent. Frons and parafacial without small silvery markings. Fronto-orbital plate setulose. Frontal stripe setulose. Eye round, about as high or slightly higher than long. Antenna considerably shorter than face. Scape, pedicel, and first flagellomere all relatively short. First flagellomere shorter than face; pointed dorsoapically. Arista longer than first flagellomere; pubescent, with hairs about as long as greatest aristal width; hairs both dorsal and ventral. Proboscis short, capitate.

Treatment: Crop, saturation +10, brightness +10, contrast +10, USM and resize.

This is an excellent macro Bente! Exceptional details, sharpness and colors..These are Very small so I appreciate the degree of difficulty here. Superb!
PS - thanx for the link, I checked out the artist and sampled the music...I enjoyed it.

It's impressive work and you show the outer vertical, postvertical and postocellar bristles that acuminate, so nicely. I can clearly see that the first flagellomere is shorter than face and pointed dorsoapically. ;)

I must say that for a fly having a whale of a time the first "flagellomere" doesn't look relatively short as the note says. ;)

Bente, although I have the feeling that sharpness could be better here, this is indeed a great capture.

Colors, pov, composition are excellent. It's always a great moment, and these moments deserve a nice photo.

Bente, you are definately the master (is that correct for a woman?) of the mating captures. You not only capture this beautiful situations nicely, but your shots look like stolen, as if you where a paparazzi :D
