| [Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note |
I took this photo in an old little vegetable cellar last week. It was a bad lightning and also pretty cold in this building. I even tried to count them, and there were approximately 30 overwintering specimens on ceiling and walls.
Order: Lepidoptera
Family: Noctuidae
Subfamily: Scoliopteryginae
Genus: Scoliopteryx
Species: S. libatrix (English name: herald moth, ; Estonian name: keldriöölane)
Wingspan 40-45 mm.
Quite a spectacular species, this colourful moth overwinters as an adult, and as a result, can be one of the last species to be seen in one year, and one of the first in the next. It is also sometimes found hibernating inside barns and outbuildings.
The adults are attracted to both light and sugar, and the species is fairly common and well distributed over much of Estonia.
The larvae feed on willow (Salix) and poplar (Populus). |

Hello Tairi,
Nice capture of the Heralt moth in a typical hibernating situation. This shot is pretty sharp. well composed ánd lighted. You must have had the camera on tripod to catch the daylight.
Well done and TFS,
Regards, Ivan
