The peacock-eye butterfly (Påfågelsöga in Swedish) is seen by many as one of a sign or harbinger of spring. These creatures bear significant eye patterns that can be seen on the peacock bird's tails on their wingsa, and are nomadic butterflies that is familiar to those who live in the English, Scottish, Finnish and Swedish countrysides. They are also seen in and Latvia and Lithuania.
I saw this one on an Åland island, in autumn time - a time when it is building up fat reserves for hibernation. Peacocks hibernate through the winter and can live up to 11 months. There is suggestion that the hibernation period for peacocks are shorter due to climate changes, giving them more time to breed, and thus an overall steady increase and expansion in their population statistics. |
