[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Erebia ligea The Arran Brown

I have been looking back through pictures from a year or so ago and came across this, that I had overlooked/forgotten. However, it struck me as an interesting, if slightly unusual, underside shot of this butterfly, especially for the pale oily sheen on the hindwing.

Seen in this side-light, instead of from 90-degrees above, the texture of the wing surface appears quite different.

Anyway, I thought I'd pop it up and see what commets you discerning viewers might have.

I've used Neat Image before cropping, resizing and sharpening. I have made no changes to colours or exposure.

Description: forewing 24/27mm, upperside ground colour black with wide red post-discal bands enclosing 3 or 4 ocelli on forewing, generallywhite-pupilled, and 3 on hindwing; underside hindwing dark basal area limited by a white streak from costa to space 5. Cilia chequered.

Flight: End of June to August

Habitat: In hilly country from 1 - 1500m, often in light woodland, especially among spruce; a lowland species in the Northern range. Larval food plants grasses, Digitaria and Milium effusum.

Distribution: SW Alps through Jura and Vosges eastwards through Alps, Carpathians and Balkans to Macedonia; also in lowland Fennoscandia and very locally in Ligurian and Roman Appenines.

Ciao Alan,
bellssima macro di questa Erebia, ottimo ed inusuale POV, molto bella la composizione con la farfalla che sembra parte del fiore, super la nitidezza e la definizione dei dettagli delle ali, magnifici i colori e BG.
TFS.

Hello Alan,

You have made a very good photo with the butterfly. There is an amaising sharpness in your photo showing in sharp details wing's texture and pattern. Colors are wonderfull to and make a good contrast with the background.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian

Hi Alan
What a pretty image with the Arran Brown butterfly on the mauve flower. I don't think I have seen one before.
All the colours in the wings seem to shine out - it may be brown, but the other colours look so beautiful - different ranges green, orange and brown.
Well done
Janice

Hi Alan:

very interesting point of view, nice composition to show this pretty buterfly. I like so much those dark green reflection on the hindwing, I dont know whether is an artifac of the flash or natural reflection of the wing scales...Thank for sharing.
