Aphantopus hyperantus Ringlet
Range: Europe, except Mediterranean and arctic regions, and across N. Asia to Ussuri.
Description: Male forewing 20/24mm., upperside ground colour almost black; upperside forewing with inconspicuous sex-brand along median vein, and with or without obscure ocelli in spaces 3 and 5; upperside hindwing obscure ocelli in spaces 2 and 3; fringes very pale; underside ground colour pale brown with a golden reflection, conspicuous buff-ringed ocelli with white pupils in spaces 3 and 5 on the forewing and spaces 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6 in uneven series on hind wing. Female upperside ground colour paler brown with ocelli, constantly present, usually white-pupilled on hind wing.
Flight: June/July
Habitat: Damp grassy places, often in light woodland, from lowlands to 5,000 feet. Larval food plants grasses, e.g. Millium, Poa, Carex and more rarely sedges.
Variation: Individual variation occurs in the development of the ocelli on the under side.
This individual is head-down in a flower profuse with nectar and is clearly oblivious to the presence of a photographer nearby. The picture has been de-noised with Neat Image, then cropped, resized and selectively sharpened for TN using Photoshop Elements. |
