[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
Until this summer I usually shoot insects without flash. In Northern countries light is always weak and I was not very satisfied and started to use flash with diffuser. Though here are some problems and I need some additional equipment for better quality (mainly to move flash into better place), I still think that I want to continue with this technique. % of sharp handshots is much much higher. In this photo were also used Kenko autoextension(2 largest) tubes and close-up 500D to get closer.

Araneus diadematus live mostly in grassland and require some form of moisture. The environment must provide plenty of attachment sites for the scaffolding of the web; there must be sufficient vertical open space for the orb web.

Terrestrial Biomes: savanna or grassland.

Physical Description
The female Araneus diadematus has a length of 6.5 to 20 mm, whereas the male is 5.5 to 13 mm. The general color ranges from a pale yellow brown to nearly black. The folium is not as distinct in some of the other Aranea species, and it includes a number of white or yellow spots. The largest of the spots are arranged longitudinally near the anterior end. Usually, there is a pair of white spots at right angles to the longitudinal ones, which gives the group the form of a cross. The cross arangement of the spots is more apparent in the darker varieties, and are caused by guanine cells which shine through the transparent cuticle. The carapace has a median and marginal dark bands. There are four pairs of legs which fan out radially from the connecting carapace and sternum. Each leg has seven segments: a coxa and a trochanter, which are both short; a long femur and a kneelike patella; a slender tibia and metatarsus; and finally a tarsus with three claws. The first pair of the front legs are relatively long and used as feelers for probing the environment. Sensory hairs densely cover the distal leg segments. The external sex organs of the male and female can be seen on the ventral view. Both the male and female's genital openings lie inside the epigastric furrow, except that the epigynum is situated in front of the female furrow. The male also contains a bulb of palp used for the storage of sperm.

Hi Aivar,
This one rocks! I would say the exposure is spot on here. Beautiful saturated colors, and the detail is very sharp. Composition and framing look great. This is an outstanding shot!
Scott

Your flash technique seems to work as the details are clear and sharp without any shadowy or blow-out area. Fine work!

Truly a great macro Aivar; colours, exposure, framing and most of all the sharpness and contrast all are super. Very nice image you should be really proud of.

I agree completely with what everyone has said so far Aivar. Very fine shot - Very well done! Thank you.

A super image. Excellent exposure and sharpness. Your 'set-up' works really well.
Great colours.
We had one of these in the front garden until end Oct. She was huge and would only come out at night.
Thanks for posting.

Superb shot!
Details are razor sharp, lighting perfect as well as framing and POV.
It's one of the best shots of this spider I've seen.
I like it very much.
VERY WELL DONE & TFS

Excellent close-up of this spider! Colors are beautiful, DOF and POV are good, and sharpness excellent. Thanks for sharing!

This has to be a great shot, I can count the eyes! Nice macro, well done indeed!

Greg

Awesome shot of this really cool looking arachnid, the perspective on this really makes the shot. :)

An excellent macro, superb details and sharpness. The use of flash looks good to me. Good POV and very good DOF.

The photo is very sharp and well composed. I take most af my handheld macro photos with the flash and diffuser and get good results. Only when the working distance gets to close does the flash shoot "over the top". What settings (ISO,SS, F-stop) did you use here?

My only nit would be the hot whites on the abdomen, but you knew that.

Really a fantastic macro! Congratulation, good colours and fantastic details!
Bye Tom

Wow! Que olhos!!
Ótima foto Aivar, cores e nitidez perfeitas!
Belíssimo trabalho!!
