Franklins Gull - Larus Pipixcan.
In all plumages has prominent white crescents above and below eye ('swollen eyelids'), more so than in Laughing Gull. Bill rather heavy, but not so long and 'drooping' as in Laughing. Adult has black hood, dark grey mantle and upper-wing, prominent white training edge, and white area inside black and white wingtip; centre of tail is light grey.

First-winter has, like adult winter, a dark half-hood (darker and more clear-cut than in other winter gulls), rather narrow dark tail band leaving the outer-most tail feathers light (first-winter Laughing Gull has wider tail band running across all tail feathers), and pale underwing (Laughing Gull has rather dark pattern on wing-coverts).

Unlike other gulls has two complete moults a year, the second in early spring prior to north-ward migration: meaning that first-summer birds return with a more adult type of wing, though lacking the white area between dark wingtip and rest of upperwing. Leading edge of primaries blackish, and dark hood is half or almost complete.

Hi Aviar, this is a lovely evocative image. If possible (it may not have been) I would leave more space in front of the bird but your timing is perfect, the colours are fantastic and I love the backlit feathers. Beautifully done :)

Beautiful photograph, Aivar. I think there's a little bit too much "dead ground" behind the gull, but cropping is simple - getting the shot in the first place is the tricky bit!

A very artistic composition. I love the quality of the light in this shot. The gold tones reflected in the water really enhance this image. Superb halo effect from the backlit gull.

Excellent! What a wonderful and pleasing picture. Some less space in the right and some more space in the left (in front of the bird) and it would have been absolutely perfect. The gold tones are stunning. Well done & TFS!
