Another photo of the Argyroneta aquatica. This time it is utilizing the leaves of a Bur-reed to move faster forward than on the slippery water surface. In this photo you can see the socket of the missing left fore leg.
The Water Spider is about 8-15 mm long (excluding the legs), the females are larger than males. It is the only known spider in the world that is adapted to live constantly in the water. Argyroneta means "with a silvery net". Special hairs on the skin of the spider give it the ability to keep the air vital for its breathing attached to its body as it dives.
It constructs a web under water and fills it with air. It catches air from the surface around its body and releases the air bubble under the web using its legs. This is repeated until there is enough air in her 'diving bell' to breathe between dives for hunt. Diffusion and oxygen bubbles released by the water plants also add air in the bubble. Prey is caught under water, killed by a poisonous bite and consumed in the air bubble in her web. The spider is a good hunter under water.
It comes out of the under-water world only to change its skin and sometimes even that is done under water in a bubble. The bite of the spider is very annoying to humans and is comparable to a wasp sting. |

Hi Pentti,
This is a wonderful capture - with some tweak of colors it will look like the spider is doing cross country skiing!!
I made a quick workshop - wanted to try a different crop.
Excellent work!

Mitä mainioin kuva! Teknisesti ja estetiikan kannalta myös.
Tästä ihmissilmäni löytävät jopa jonkinasteisia koomisia vivahteita ( kuin hämähäkki olisi suorastaan itse rakentanut tiensä yli veden).
