Gonepteryx rhamni female / Brimstone female / Zitronenfalter weibchen / Le Citron femelle / Citroenvlinder vrouwtje.

The Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni) is a mid-sized butterfly. The male is yellow and the female is lime green. The caterpillars eat buckthorn leaves. Found in Europe, Asia, and even north Africa, it is one of the longest living butterflies, living up to nine months.

Brimstone butterflies feed only on buckthorn and alder buckthorn bush foliage, and eat throughout the fall to build up energy reserves for the winter. It settles on evergreen plants and hibernates for the winter season.

The brimstone usually hides until early spring, then mates, lays eggs, and dies. It only takes flight when the sun is out.

Distinguishing marks:
Unmistakable. See picture. The female is paler yellow (more greenish) than the male.

Flying time:
Early april till early june and early july till early october.

Appearance:
Common. Near woodlands, in parks, gardens, etc.

Foodplant caterpillar:
Frangula alnus and Rhamnus catharticus

The Brimstone hibernates as an adult, so on warm days in november, december, january, february or march they can, sometimes 'by mistake', crawl out of their hiding places (sheds, attics, hollow trees) and fly around for a little while. This butterfly is resident throughout Europe and North Africa.

Hello Harm !
I have seen this b-fly from close only one time, and I didn't manage to get such a good shot as this one - brilliant work, really ! Excellent details, vivid colors, beautiful blurred BG, but more than anything else I like the composition of the picture, with the b-fly and the beautiful flower making a nice diagonal. Very well done !
Valerie.

Hallo Harm,
Erg mooie foto in een fantastische compositie. Vooral de contrasten tegen de donkergroene achtergrond zijn schitterend. Uitstekende scherpte en POV.
Groet,
Peter

Hello Harm,

There are especialy the wings of the butterfly that you have shown in great details. It is not easy to render well flat whitish surfaces. You have done it very well. The POV you have chosen as well as the delicate shadows of wing's veins give a fine depth to the image.

Thank you for sharing,
Cristian
