Bamboo mite.
Bamboo mites can be diagnosed by yellow blemishes on upper side of leaves.
These mites were taken on September 20, 2004 on sheets of Bamboo of the Phyllostachys kind, bamboos which had been just planted on the commune of Montbazon (37200). The nests are located under the lower part of the sheets which take a yellowish aspect because of the disturbance of the chlorophyllian synthesis due to the suction of the phytophagous mites. The disposition of the nests shows always the same arrangement (fig. 1), the dark spots corresponds to the cluster of droppings of the mite. Under the fine woven fabric, one finds eggs, young mites and larger adults (fig. 2). With the observation under a binocular magnifying glass, it is possible to distinguish clearly in the abdomen from the insect from small green spheres corresponding has absorptive chlorophyl. A more attentive observation of the population of the nest makes it possible after incubation of the insects in the lactic acid during a few hours (technical information data by Yves Coineau, Professor with the national Natural history museum of natural History, Directeur of the Laboratory of Zoology of the Arthropods) to distinguish under the magnifying glass two populations distinct of mites. Phytophagous mites from 300 to 400 µm the length (Fig.4) probably of the family of Tetranychidae (Shizotetronychus Celarius variety) and predatory mite of those one, a little larger, of oval form (fig. 3) of the Gamases kind not uropodes, characterized by a flattened elliptic body, relatively long legs (see the work: These tiny animals which surround us of Y. Cleva entitled the Micro Zoo, Borders of Invisible, editions Hachette Paris 1993.) It should be noted that these nest of mites remained "inhabited" all the winter 2004, in June 2005, they had disappeared!! and to my knowledge without any treatment!!

A very well documented scientific or biological study supported with this excellent visual material. This clearly shows how minute these mites are and it really highlights the magnificent job you have performed.

Ce groupe de photos est très intéressant, car il reürésente une créature minuscules que l'on n'a pas souvent l'occasion de voir - moi en tout cas je n'avais jamais vu ces p'tites bêtes. C'est bien d'avoir inclus la taille des mites, et la note est très intéressante aussi. Félicitations !
