I have some comments:
When you shoot birds on sky background, always use exposure compensation. Usually +1 is good.
Since I assume your lens is not a professional lens, you should try to close the aperture to at least f/8.0 and even more. If you don't have enough light, increase the ISO. It is usually better to shoot with high ISO, then shooting at maximum aperture on non professional lenses.
Always recompose your photo by cropping the unnecessary background. Try when possible, that sun will be behind you.
