Valerie, we have missed you a great deal here on TN in the past couple of months. Hope you were fruitfully busy elsewhere.

Thanks for posting this wonderful picture today.
Though the mother looks badly bruised, it feels good to know that it is nothing serious and that she is actually quite fine.
Your story told succinctly but effectively, carries the message loud and clear -- maternal instinct is the greatest life force.
The picture with the cute little pup snuggling against its mother is simply adorable.
Well done and keep posting whenever you find time.

A very interesting story.Arctic wolf culture is very unique ,and their behaviour can be brutal.The shot is very endearing.The pose of mother with young is excellent,and the wounds give the impression of the protective mother.Very well done,TFS

this really is a touching scene, mum looks like shes been in one hell of a fight, i guess the meaternal instinct is strong in all animals.

What an excellent photo and such a great note to go with it.
Female wolves have a very strong mothering instinct, although sometimes, younger ones do reject their young.
In the wild state, only the Alpha male and female breed, but all the pack will take care of the young.
The wolf will retain its instincts even in captivity and maybe this young female was not the alpha of the captive pack, therefore she was disciplined by the real alpha female.
You can see such behaviours even in domesticated dogs.
I once had a Doberman that stole kittens from the mother cats bed when she ventured out.
I used to have to get them back out of her kennel and put them back with the distressed mother cat.
Anyway, its a great photo of a beautiful subject.
