Today I visited a wildlife park called 'Parc animalier de Sainte-Croix'. There you can see all the different animals who live in Europe, bears, wolves, foxes, deers, elks, but also rodents, birds and even turtles... The animals live in lage enclosures which are as close as possible to their natural environment, and all of them seemed to be happy. It was a cloudy and windy day, but fortunatley we had very few rain, and I could take lots of beautiful pictures ! :-) This shot was taken through a fence, under a rain shower, with a poor light... But still I like it ! :-)

This is a European Brown Bear (Ursus arctos). They are close relatives to the american Grizzly, but smaller and less dangerous - the zoo keeper said that they never attack human beings, they prefer to hide or to run away. Meat represents only 20 % of their diet, and they never catch any fishes - they prefer to eat grass, leaves, roots and other vegetation. They also like snails, slugs or frogs, and they love everything that is sweet, like honey or marmelade.

Usually they live 20 to 25 years in the wild, but in captivity thay can live up to 60 years - in captivity they don't need to hibernate and that's wy they live longer. They have almost disappeared in the wild, in France, and they can only be seen in zoos now or in some remote parts of the Pyrenean mountains.

The bear was so close to the fence i could have touched him by stretching my arm, but of course I didn't try it ! :-)) They are not agressive, but the zoo keeper told us they could kill a man by wanting to play with him...

By the way, this will probably be the last photo for a while, because i just found a job and I won't be able to spend as many time on TN as before... But I will try to do my best, because TN has become so important for me these last months !

I hope you will like the picture !

Excellent portrait.Details are amazing.I liked POV,sharpness, expression on face framing and composition a lot.
TFS...:-)

Hi, great picture; the poor light is actually very nice, soft and it brings out the details. Congratulations on finding a job! Is it a job in the "green" sector that might bring you opportunities to make photographs? Thanks,

Paul

Bonsoir Valérie
Bravo pour cette image qui est parfaite dans la netteté comme dans le cadrage. Les couleurs et le contraste est également splandide.

Hi Valerie,
I love the way you've framed this shot, it's great, nice frame-filling crop/composition. Good detail and great rich colours. A shame about the wire trace across the top of the image, I posted a workshop to try and minimise it, hope you like the result. Great shot and a great note too. Hope the new job goes well!
Regards,
Adrian

Hola Valerie,
¡Por fin llegan las esperas fotos del zoo! Una composición muy buena de este oso de aspecto amigable, con buen detalle y una manera creativa de recoger lo grande que el animal es sin perder detalle de la cabeza.
Un saludo, José M.

Hi Valerie,
I am glad you mentioned in your note how you shot this photo. I was already wondering about the grey stripes. The sharpness of this photo is excellent with great focus on the head of the bear. I like it pose with the half open mouth and its innocent look. Great colors and good use of the limited light.
TFS,
Niek

Hi Valerie,
Great post. Very good job with the light, detail, sharpness, pose, and POV. Perhaps a tiny bit more contrast. You clipped the rt ear a bit..but that's nit picking :)
