I shot this picture at the Parc Naturel de sainte-Croix. He was standing so close to the fence I could take the picture with my 18-55 lense, and he didn't seem to be afraid at all. He just stared at me without moving, and it was wonderful to be able to watch such a beautiful bird. A great moment.

I took the picture through a fence, on a dark and rainy day (you can even see drops of water on the bird's feathers) that's why it came out a bit dark.

Thanks to Niek (SunToucher) and Scott (Scotthale) I could give a name to this beautiful bird. So thank you both for your help !

Red Kite (Milvus milvus)

The Red Kite is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards and harriers. It is a European rare species which is resident in the milder parts of its range.

The Red Kite is 61–72 cm (24–28 in) long with a 175-200 cm (69–79 in) wingspan. It is an elegant bird, soaring with long wings and long forked tail twisting as it changes direction. The body, upper tail and wing coverts are rufous. The white primary flight feathers contrast with the black wing tips and dark secondaries. Both sexes are similar, but juveniles have a buff breast and belly.

The call is a thin piping, similar to but less mewling than Common Buzzard. This species nests in trees, often close to other kites. In winter, many kites will roost together.

At signs of danger a mother will signal the young who will 'play dead' to the extent that a fox will believe them to be dead and leave them, thinking it can return to eat them later.

Hola Valerie,
Bella foto de este pájaro de presa que tiene una postura apropiada a la lluvia que está soportando. Original pose, rara en estas magestusas águilas. Buena exposición, excelentes detalles y -como siempre- una composición atractiva e impecable.
Un saludo,
José M.

Hello Valerie,
It is a beautiful bird indeed!
But with a somewhat sad look or maybe it is just me...
Well composed presentation, subject is captured with great details in the plumage and very natural colours!
Greetings,

Hi Valerie

Sorry I can not help with the ID, but I'm sure one of our TN friends will help shortly. From its size and from its looks the closest I would venture is by speculating that it might be some kind of falcon, but I might be totally wrong with this assumption. It sure is a gorgeous specimen and you’ve managed pretty well to capture its striking beauty.

I can not see what your F/stop setting was, but looking at the bird’s body I would think that you were sold a little short on the DOF. However, what you lost there you made up triple with the amazing details and stunning colours you captured in the facial area, especially that remarkable eye and the incredible beak. The BG is well removed and sufficiently OOF and does not cause any distraction. You managed to control the exposure rather well and made good use of the fill-in flash.

Good work and TFS.
Regards
Loot

Hi Valerie,
it's a wonderful shot, so sharp and crisp, I can count the feathers - there are 2836 of them ;-), thanks

Hi Valerie,
Beautiful picture. May be because of rain that made this proud bird looks a bit strange. Excellent sharpness, composition, exposure. Congratulations.

Bonjour Valerie!

You're lucky! You met so beautifull bird and captured it in excellent pose. Vigilant eye, great sharpness and POV - everything is perfect.

HI Valerie,
I did some research for you, and I think it is the Milvus Milvus aka Red Kite. (http://home.hccnet.nl/r.goedegebuur/plaatjes/rodewouwp6.html)

You caught him really well, with super details and colors. The fill flash really helped to bring all the details out in the feathers. The BG looks a little bussy, but nothing major.

Good luck on your exposition.

TFS,
Niek

There are rainy days at the weekend where I find myself staring out at the rain whilst drinking a cup of coffee - this bird has the exact same look :)

Wonderful shot, lovely sharp details, great POV and wonderful colours (especially considering the dull weather)

Hi valerie,
indeed an excellent shot. this is a real close one. Very detailed with patterns on the feathers. Superbly executed and you have taken the opportunity very well.
Congrats for this amazing presentation.

Hi Valerie,
This is one of your early photographs and - it is astounding - how much your technic has changed an improved since!

Already then you showed your eye for Nature's beauty: the head of your kite is magnificent.

I guess - due to the rain - the light conditions were bad and therefore the depth of field did not reach the neck and shoulders.

Quite obviously, the bird is watching you, and you must have a very good flash - the animals does not appear to be disturbed.

As a matter of interest (I do not know anything about European Birds) - before writing this critique - I looked at several photos of Red Kites on the internet; I wonder, if your bird was a juvenile, because most images show some brownish feathers on the head and bigger, darker blobs on the other feathers...

Whatever he/she/it was, I also like very much the NATURAL background - overall very good work.
Regards
Ingrid
