LIBELLULA DEPRESSA (Linné)
Libellule déprimée(Fr) - Broad Bodied Chaser (En)
Odonates order, Libellulidae family

DESCRIPTION
Lenght: 40-50mm, Wingspan: 70-80mm
Wings have a brownish spot at the base. Broad flattened body, blue with lateral yellow patches (male) or clear brown (female). Odonates are carvivorous insects. They chase their prey everywhere, still or flying.

DISTRIBUTION
Europe and Asia Minor. May to August.

HABITAT
Live close to stagnant waters, but are also going away. Not seen in mountains above 2000m.

REPRODUCTION
The male remains close to the female during eggs laying. Larvae lives two years in the pond. During very dry summer, larvae sunks into the mud.

Hi Jean Michel, nice capture. I like the POV and theres some good detail here. Maybe it could be a little sharper but I know how difficult these are to capture. Well done.

Nice work Jean Michel, those are very timid insects. This is a challenge to get such a shot. Rather good details and a good composition.

Hi Jean , ours are not out yet so nice to see this female, I think you could of done with using a higher F stop to get a better DOF. how close where you to it? I find getting as cloose as possible with-out using any zoom gives the best DOF and image in my experiance.
I notice both you and the books talk about the male guarding her while she oviposits, from observations at the lake at work I have not seen this happen ever, ours spend 20mins depositing eggs by dipping her abdomen and dropping eggs onto the water surface where the jelly swells and they sink and stick to the vegitation below the surface.
