The insect
Cetonia aurata, (Linnaeus, 1758)
Large beetles of the family Scarabaeidae, whose size can reach up to two centimeters. The adult appear usually in spring and can remain visible until early autumn.
As well the hot summer as the cold winters make them disappear from view: they live sheltered from the elements, a few feet underground.
This insect is characterized by a spectacular polychrome. Its color is metallic green, sometimes red, blue, yellow copper. The elytra could be ornamented with white spots, aligned. The color of the elytra is due to a phenomenon of circular polarization of light; seen through a polarizing filter Conversely, they would be colorless.
The elytra are fused and do not open during the flight, but only to let the hind wings to deploy.
Particularly fond of the stamens of the roses, the rose chafer owe to them their popular name, and are not welcome to the gardener. They can also be satisfied with all sorts of other flowers.
Larvae play a significant ecological role in recycling organic matter and, as such, must be preserved.
Photography
The insect was photographed in the heart of a rose, blooming just after a rain: the light was not very bright. For this reason, the value of sensitivity was set to iso-640. To get a good depth of field, the macro lens of 50 mm has been open to F/22. The speed is determined automatically from 1 / 100 th. |
