Juniperus communis
Not coniferous conifer of the family of Cupressacées
( Calocèdre, Cypress, Juniper, Libocèdre, Thuya)
Etymology: of the Latin juniperus, of the Celtic gen, "bush", and prus, "bitter".
Origin: Europe. The Juniper cade is a Mediterranean sort.
Environment: héliophile sort, admits the poor grounds, possibly calcareous, sandy and dry, until 1500 m of height.
Life expectancy: 200 years.
Uses: the false bays(berries) of the common Juniper contain a principle which facilitates the digestion and the drainage of the liver (they are diuretic). We use them in the manufacturing of alcohol (Gin, Juniper berry, aquavit).
Its bark is used in decoction against the furunculosis (50 g by liter of water).
Of the Juniper cade, we also extract from some oil of cade, which is a powerful antiseptic. Of its wood, we make pencils.
