English name : Speckled wood – Scientific name : Pararge aegeria – Family : Satyridae.

Description : Wingspan 35-45mm. Wings brown with pale yellow spots, especially on forewings; forewing with one eye-spot, hindwing with three; in the female (pictured) the pattern of yellowish spots is more extensive than in the male; underside of hind wing marbled brown yellow. The intensity of the colours varies greatly from place to place.
Distribution : Europe and north Africa. Found in open deciduous woods, on the edges of woods, in clearings, and along forest rides.
Flight period : March to October, usually with two or three broods. Hibernation : As a chrysalis, but occasionally as a caterpillar.
Behaviour : Prefers to remain in shade and half-shade; readily rests on the leaves of shrubs and herbaceous plants; feeds on nectar and the juice of overripe berries, also on excrement and flowing tree sap. The male will vigorously defend his territory against intruders; the female lays her eggs singly on grass stems and the leaves of the caterpillar's food plants.
Caterpillar : Matt green with a short pale forked tail, with very short hairs. Chrysalis green or dark brown, suspended from the base of grass stems or beneath loose stones.

Wonderful shot of the Speckled Wood. Lovely colours with sharp details. POV, DOF and the green leaves as BG are all excellent. The natural light and the diagonal pose enhances the beauty of the shot. Very nicely composed. Kudos.

Hi Christian.
Your butterfly picture is perfect and I like it so much. Butterfly is pictured nicely: its sharpness, colours, texture and all other details are amazing. Composition of the shot, two impressive layers (leaf as FG with beautiful butterfly on it and remote nicely blurred BG) are perfect too. Selected POV is so impressive. The dusky colored butterflies are hard to photograph, but you have fine details here. Excellent focus and details. Your POV is excellent. Outstanding exposure too and I like the composition.
