Green Hairstreak, Callophrys rubi
The Green Hairstreak is commonly distributed in Europe and is, surprisingly, sometimes found at surprisingly high altitude. I came across this individual on Sunday near the Lac du Mont Cenis, which is at 2050m very close to the Italian border on the road that runs down into the Susa valley and then on to Turin.
The butterfly perched for a short while in this rather leathery green leaf, pretty much at ground level and then flew off not to be seen again. So the BG is a bit busy, but the overall effect is a symphony in different shades of green.
The picture was lit by direct sunlight but also with some fill-in flash. From the exif data it would seem that the sunlight was sufficient for the shutter to close before the flash lighting was needed. It has been croped and resized for TN, with some selective sharpening after resizing. |

Hi Alan,
A nice capture of this green hairstreak with green BG. Excellent composition. But I see the tail part of the butterfly is a bit blurred. Anyway still then a nice capture. Thanks a lot for sharing.
Ciao Alan, lovely little butterfly, splendid light and colors, good details and excellent sharpness, very well done, ciao Silvio

Hello Allan !
Thi is such a beautiful butterfly, I love his geen color, it's quite unusual. I also like all the details you managed to capture on your picture, as well as the natural colors and the composition. You made great use of your flash. Very well done !
Valérie.
Hello Alan,
a splendid picture of the Green Hairstreak, this butterfly is indeed surprising that it adjusts oneself to every surrounding, good sharpness and very beautiful colour tones, well composed.
