Goldfinch
Carduelis carduelis
AKA: European goldfinch
A highly coloured finch with a bright red face and yellow wing patch. Sociable, often breeding in loose colonies, they have a delightful liquid twittering song and call. Their long fine beaks allow them to extract otherwise inaccessible seeds from thistles and teasels. Increasingly they are visiting birdtables and feeders. In winter many UK goldfinches migrate as far south as Spain.

Likes trees and bushes with areas of tall weeds nearby. Often breeds near man in parks, gardens, nurseries, orchards and churchyards. In wider countryside likes woodland edges and heaths and commons with gorse and hawthorn.

What does it eat? Seeds and insects in summer.
What does it sound like? A liquid, twittering song with trills; twittering calls
Did you know? The scientific name Carduelis comes from the Latin for thistle.

Hello Gary
Wonderful shot. Excellent subject. I love these wee birds. They always sound happy. Great POV, pose and background. Nice work. Thanks

beautiful capture! Nice greens! Very effective overall composition. Well done.

Hmmm, wish I had one of a Goldfinch with a natural BG like this one Gary. Only nit is the lack of catchlight in the eye so I've done a workshop to put one in. Otherwise very nice image - sharp, detailed and, as I said great setting. TFS :)

Hi Gary,
I love all your bird-shots - they are wonderful - special this one. I tell you why:
The same bird than this also visited my garden and we were so proud to have the camera clear and made several shots - but all were overexposed, wrong setting - I nearly cried.
So thank you for this beautiful shot, I love it and remembers me to the single visit of this wonderful bird, bye
Sabine - wishnugaruda
