IDENTIFICATION
Lenght: 40-42cm, Wingspan 75-80cm
Wood Pigeons can be identified in all plumages by the obvious white marks at the bend of the wings which show up in flight as diagnostic white lines down the middle of the wing. Another good feature is the neat white patch on either side of the neck, although juveniles lack this mark. Compared to other pigeons, the Wood Pigeon is bigger and more ponderous in flight with a deeper belly and a longer tail. When taking off and landing, one's can hear their wings flapping. This is noticeable also during nuptial flight, when they climb high and glide further with extended wings.
FOOD
Berries, grain, buds. In autumn, beechnuts and acorns. They often look for food in cultivated fields early in the morning or at dusk.
HABITAT
Breeds in woodlands, scrub and hedges and increasingly, parks and gardens in towns. Winters in woodlands and often feeds on stubble fields.
POPULATION
A common bird throughout much of Europe, especially in wooded areas, but often in towns too.
9-12 million breeding pairs across much of Europe. Half this population can be found in Britain, France and Germany. Population is increasing in Europe. Hunting authorized.
Some infos from this site
--------------------------------
We don't have many around, because they mainly live in the woods, where they nest. Due to this year's cold winter, they come closer and share ivy bays with starlings and blackbirds in our garden.
--------------------------------
Taken early in the morning, with not much light. Focal lenght 300mm (with converter). All enhancements on PaintShop Pro9, including cropping, mirroring, chromatic aberration correction (typical with backlitten shots), levels, USM. On request, original will be posted in the workshop as information.

Très belle photo. les ramiers sont souvent très farouches et ce n'est pas simple d'en obtenir un bon cliché comme celui-ci, même lorsqu'on en a des nichées dans le jardin, comme c'est notre cas.

Nice work Jean Michel, the composition and pose are nice and I like the backlighting. I think there is a blue cast over the image. I have done a WS that goes some way to correct this. I hope you don't mind and that you like it. Well done.

Hi Jean Michel,
Once again,I'm surprised to see the species you have in France. It's really quite an exotic place.
This pigeon is similar in some ways to our Kereru, the New Zealand native pigeon. Ours is more colourful, is bigger, and is a very noisy and clumsy flier.
I posted one in my first few weeks on TN.
I'll post another soon. Cheers, Steve.

Very nice capture Jean Michel. Great pose and quality. I'm not big pigeons fan so I think all pigeons should be move to forest ;-)

Bonne prise de vue et belle composition. Félicitations !

Very nice shot Jean Michel.
Nice pose, very good composition and details.
Well done.

Nice shot, good pose. Focus seems to be a bit soft.
Well done.
TFS.

Jean, A very pleasing shot. I like the action, with the pigeon busily munchin' down the berries. Good clean BG & natural colors. Well done!

Jean-Michel,je crois que nous n'avons que le pigeon biset par chez nous. Ils sont friands de statues au centre ville de Montréal ;-)
Une excellente photo accompagnée d'une non-moins excellente note.
Merci bien.

Hi JM
No time for full names. This is a nice but difficult customer to shoot - I have tried, but not too successful. This is a wee bit soft, but out in the open and one can see the shape and plumage quite well.
Yes, I remeber even the song - by the time they got to woodstock, they were half a million strong. Summer of '69, or should I say wnter. This gives away our age!
Have a nice day.

Nice capture of this very common and well tasting bird Jean Michel. They seem to be everywhere. Nice soft colours, very good dof and sharpness and funny pose.

hey jean, very nice shot!sharpness and focus are good.so are the colours, a bit greyish though.i also like his pose :) well done!

Jean Michel, I like this a lot. A great moment.

Amazing sharpness, great composition and pov.

According to your note, you used PaintShop Pro9 in your post-processing. I'd llke to try it. How can I get it?

Best regards.

Lívio
