Nice picture, excellent detail.

As for the ID, the insect is a true fly. True flies have one pair of wings, the second pair have been reduced to club-like counter weights (these can clearly be seen in the above). The mouthpiece is particularly distinctive. I have a not disimilar fly in my photos (title: unknown fly) and it belongs to the family Conopidae (thick-headed flies) I think that that would be a good place to start for the ID of your insect.

I cant help you with the name of this fly, but this is the right place to find out. I do kna that this is a good capture with nice colors and DOF

Très bonne mise au point sur cet étrange insecte qui semble porter un masque !
La composition est bonne, ainsi que la gestion de la PDC. Petit bémol pour la lumière qui me semble un peu dure.
Très belle macro en tout cas !

Paul Prince was right, it's a Conopidae (Myopa sp., probably M. dorsalis).
