ROCK KESTRELS :
This species occurs over a large range. It is widespread in Europe, Asia, and Africa, as well as occasionally reaching the east coast of North America. Unlike most hawks they display sexual colour dimorphism with the male having a blue-grey head and tail. The tail is brown with black bars in females, and has a black tip with a narrow white rim in males.
Common Kestrels measure 34–38 cm (~13–15 in) from head to tail, with a wingspan of 70–80 cm (~27–31 in).
This is a diurnal animal and prefers an "open country" habitat such as fields, heaths, and marshland. When hunting, the Common Kestrel hovers about 10–20 m (~33–66 ft) above the ground searching for prey. Once prey is sighted, the bird makes a short, steep dive toward the target.
Kestrels prey upon small mammals, including voles, as well as small birds, large insects, and earthworms. They never prey upon toads: they hate the taste.
THE PIC :
Young one just out of the nest. with young ones you still can't distinguish males from females.
PP WORK :
Pic scanned from a paper print.
Crop 80%
autolevel (effect then removed on the top right corner)

Hello JeanMarie,
Very fine shot of this young Rock Kestrel in a charming pose. I'd guess he's preening himself. Great sharpness and very nice colours. Well composed too!
Many thanks, Ulla

Hi JeanMarie.
I like your so impressive and perfectly composed shot of this beauty bird. Despite the complex light condition picture is exposed very well, colours are great, pose of the bird is nice and attractive. Excellent job and TFS.
