Le Gendarme, le Suisse, le Soldat, ou encore le Cherche-midi de son nom scientifique Pyrrhocoris apterus.
La taille est d'environ 10mm. La cuticule présente des dessins en rouge et noir évoquant un masque de style africain. La teinte et la forme des taches est conditionnée par des éléments extérieurs: l'étendue des pigments noirs par exemple est influencé par la température.
C'est une espèce grégaire et polyphage formant des groupes parfois très importants sur le tronc et au pied des tilleuls et dévorant également les oeufs d'autres insectes et des insectes morts.
Le Gendarme est la Punaise d'Europe la plus commune et la plus répandue: On la rencontre dans les zones tempérées d'Europe et dans la zone méditerranéenne, jusqu'à l'Inde, partout sauf en montagne. Elle est cependant absente de la Scandinavie et n'est présente que dans quelques régions du Sud des Îles Britanniques.

Nice shot Jean, this is a Fire-bug (Phyrrhocoris apterus) it is a very good photo with excellent colours and composition. PLease write a note

Beautiful contrast of colours, between the out of focus greens of the background and the reds and pinks in the foreground.

As with many macro shots, it would be nice to see the front quarter of the insect rather than the rear. However, the sitter isn't always that co-operative. Nice photo.
