[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
The poppy of wartime remembrance (for the end of my commemorative series) is the red corn poppy, Papaver rhoeas. This poppy is a common weed in Europe and is found in many locations, including Flanders Fields.
It grows well on disturbed soil.

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
~John McCrae, May 3, 1915

The verse above comes from a poem that is probably the most memorable war poem ever written. It was penned by a Canadian physician and Lieutenant Colonel attached to the 1st Field Artillery Brigade on the day he buried his friend and former student, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer, the culmination of seventeen horrific days of treating injured and dying men in the terrible battle of Ypres.

It wasn't until last night that I realized that I had taken this picture on the exact anniversary of the death of that soldier and fellow Canadian, in the land where he had died.

Tech: This flower, found growing beside a railway track was shot on a very windy day; cropped, reduced for TN, framed and signed

Thanks for looking

Bonjour Silke
Très belle composition et couleurs que tu as réalisé tout près de chez moi.
Amicalement Robi

How clever of you. I have often wondered at the poppies that are sold each year...as to their meaning..I did so serve in the 1960's for a bit until I disagreed with the war....and bought a paper one yesterday from a Vet who was wheelchair bound... It is indeed a day of remembrance. Very good dedication.

Hello Silke

A beautiful and fitting tribute for Remembrance Day.The coincidence tells me it was meant to be.
You have composed the shot well, and your usual presentation is excellent.
I like the DOF,and POV.The focus on the poppy is wonderful.
I heard that in the last 10 years ,Legion membership has dropped from 500,000 to just over 300,000 ,age is catching up with our vets.I hope new people will make their way into the ranks to continue on with the poppy campaigns of the future.

Hello Silke,
This Poppy is a perfect post for Remembrance Day. I like the way it is bowing its head! When I first came to England in 1961 it used to be a "big thing" in Cambridge with collections and various events to raise money, I wonder if that custom remains today.
I like your note and the beautiful poem!
Many thanks, Ulla

This is the most appropriate Poppy that I have seen for Remembrance Day!
The colour, the way it hangs and the shaded centre give it an air of solemnity.
An excellent shot for the purpose and a superb shot technically and esthetically.
Well done, Silke!

Ivan

What a lovely tribute Silke. I remember traveling through that area and was so moved by the reverence paid by the local citizens to those who fell during both great wars. I don't think we have forgotten but I wonder sometimes if we learned anything from it.

Thank you,

Evelynn : )

Very sharp with very nice details. Great composition with beautiful colors and a nice POV.
Best wishes,
Achim

Hi Silke. You have taken a fine picture and posted it on a special day. I will not say why but this means a lot to me so a big thanks .TFS. some very special notes too.
Nick.

I love the black frame because it makes the red really pop. The exposure is excellent and I love how stark the poppy is against a soft background. I also love your notes. Fantastic all the way around.

Hi Silke,
May I apply this to Veteran's Day here in the U.S.?
The passionate red color makes the perfect card of remembrance. Excellent presentation and message my dear :)
Howard

Hi Silke,
A beautiful tribute from you to the vets. Just a great all around presentation. Many young men, go off to war, the lucky ones return, like my Dad, but it forever changes alot of them.
Bless them all. Thanks Silke.
